When we remind ourselves that this year has brought disappointments of various kinds and degrees, we should easily recognize our need for the Counselor. Do some of you have a smug sense of self-satisfaction for your life? Do you have confidence in your money power, brain power, or your social power? Or, have you found that your house in which you have enshrined your happiness has been engulfed by failures and reverses? Are you looking for someone or something that can effectively life you out of the labyrinth of hopelessness and helplessness? If so, you can find a divine Counselor today.
This Counselor was born in Bethlehem, but now sits at the right hand of God the Father, waiting to intercede for you. Here is a Counselor who is concerned about eh soul that lives for material possessions and earthly success. Here is the faithful, efficient, effective Counselor, who tells us, “Seek first the kingdom of God” :that is, get right with God. Remove the barrier that separates you from God and that keeps you away fro the inner happiness and peace which alone makes life worth living.
When you come to this great and wonderful Counselor, He will tell you: “He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” He will tell you: “Let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in Him.” (John 14:1) He will tell you: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified… for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)
This great Counselor will tell you: “For the sake of His great name the Lord will not reject His people, because the Lord was pleased to make you His own.” (1 Samuel 12:22)
The One whose name is Counselor will remind you of the words of the Psalmist: “I will be glad and rejoice in Your love, for you saw affliction and knew the anguish of my soul” (Psalm 31:7).
He will tell you: “A righteous person may have troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.” (Psalm 34:19). The great Counselor will remind you: “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him; He hears their cry and saves them.” (Psalm 145:18,19)
